Karibu Nshuti: Hail!

Karibu is Swahili for 'welcome,' and nshuti is Kinyarwanda for 'friend'.

So, welcome friend.

Between 2007-09, I lived and worked in Rwanda through Voluntary Services Overseas, helping to develop the first dictionary of Sign Language. During that time, I kept a daily blog of my experiences.

Rwanda is a country of extremes. It is fair to say that it included some of the best and worst moments of my life.

I have been back in the UK for four years now, and I feel it's time to revisit the world I once called home. I've decided to read back through my old blog and re-post it here.

My camera was stolen quite early on in my visit, so I don't have many pictures from that time. To make the blog more interesting, I've added a few extra video and photo snippets. Apart from that, and some attention to grammar, all of the posts are as I originally made them.

There's a bit of postage either side of my time in Rwanda. I'm not sure whether the same person that went came back. Perhaps you can judge.

I was British, female, and 26 when I left. Two of those facts remain unchanged.

Some names of people and organisations have been altered to protect anonymity.
